This page lists the COSIMA “Flagship Model Configurations”, along with links to information on the model configurations, code bases, and publications.

ACCESS-OM2

ACCESS is the Australian community climate model. The ocean model components of ACCESS include MOM5.1, with the CICE5 sea ice model and OASIS3-MCT coupling. ACCESS-OM2 is designed to be consistent with the full coupled version of ACCESS (ACCESS-CM2). COSIMA supports ACCESS-OM2 at three resolutions: the standard 1° resolution, and the higher 0.25° and 0.1° resolutions. Each resolution is defined at the Equator, with a tripolar grid north of 65°N and Mercator projection down to 65°S, and then meridional spacing independent of latitude to the Antarctic ice shelf edge. The entire ACCESS-OM2 suite is available from our COSIMA GitHub repository. Details of each model are listed below. Further details are given in Kiss et al. (2020) and a technical report.

ACCESS-OM2

ACCESS-OM2 is the moniker used to describe the suite of ACCESS Ocean Models, as well as specifically the
default 1° model version, with 50 vertical levels. The model is configured to run with the JRA55-do forcing datasets. Read more …

ACCESS-OM2-025

ACCESS-OM2-025 is the 1/4° resolution ACCESS-based ocean-sea ice model, with 50 vertical levels.  The model is configured to run with the JRA55-do forcing dataset. Read more …

ACCESS-OM2-01

ACCESS-OM2-01 is a newer 1/10° ocean-sea ice model, with 75 vertical levels. The model is configured to run with the JRA55-do forcing dataset. Read more …

Older MOM-SIS models (deprecated)

Much of the ocean-sea ice modelling research in Australia in the last two decades has used the Modular Ocean Model, known as MOM. MOM is derived from NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, and has a worldwide user base. It comes pre-packaged with the FMS coupler and the SIS sea ice model. There are COSIMA configurations of MOM at both 0.25° and 0.1°, including biogeochemistry. Each of these model options is detailed below.

MOM-SIS-025

MOM-SIS-025 is our previous workhorse 1/4° ocean-sea ice model, now deprecated and replaced by ACCESS-OM2-025. It uses MOM5.1 with 0.25° lateral resolution at the Equator, tripolar in the north and Mercator projection down to 65°S, with 50 vertical levels. The sea ice is SIS, coupled with the FMS coupler. The model can be forced using either CORE or JRA forcing sets. The model has been used in a wide range perturbation experiments and publications. Read more …

MOM-SIS-01

MOM-SIS-01 is our previous 1/10° ocean-sea ice model, now deprecated and replaced by ACCESS-OM2-01. It uses MOM5.1 with 0.1° lateral resolution at the Equator, tripolar in the north and Mercator projection down to 65°S and 75 vertical levels. The sea ice is SIS, coupled with the FMS coupler. The model can be forced using either CORE or JRA forcing sets. The model has been used in a range perturbation experiments and publications. Read more …

MOM-SIS-025-WOMBAT

MOM025-FMS-SIS-WOMBAT is our workhorse 1/4° ocean-sea ice model coupled to the WOMBAT biogeochemistry model, soon to be deprecated and replaced by ACCESS-OM2 at three resolutions. The model undergone substantially tunings to improve the tracer distributions. Read more …
